Protected: The Green Season | Episode 05: The Oldest Joke
The Oldest Joke is the episode the whole season has been paying for. The milk comes into the grain heads, which starts the ducks' clock, and while the settlement rolls up its fences for the pulling, its memory keeper begins, briskly and without one wasted word, to settle her affairs: the mail, the school, the medicine book, a ledger balanced that the living are never supposed to balance, and one last reel recorded in her own voice with instructions about who does the labels. The pulling itself is the release run in reverse, four hundred employees' worth of objection, a duck on Marisol's shoulder like an admiral's parrot, and one white bird going over the wire into the country nobody manages, unpursued, because somebody broke the rules and gave him a name. Then the bell, and the rise past the north checks, and a feast with an empty chair at the center table, where the oldest joke in the valley gets told the way it was built to be told, which was always this way. The episode ends in the wrong silence of the emptied paddies, with one kiss, and three weeks.
