Delicious is the episode the key was for. Kit finally enters the archive, threads the first reel, and the series drops back fifty years into the world before, told through what survives of it: the recordings, the notebooks, and one photograph of three men in front of a barn that is still the barn. A rice farmer nobody will fund and a bookkeeper nobody will hire meet in the wreckage of a money scheme both of them know is stupid, and become the double act the whole valley still runs on. The radio counts indictments and blackouts and neighbors leaving while the money over the hills funds intelligence and calls food a solved problem, and forty acres of ducks quietly keep proving everyone wrong. Then the radio goes silent, the road fills, and a man with a notebook stands at a fence line writing down the one heading everything after was built on. By the time the reel runs out, the joke the whole settlement performs every year has a floor under it, and it is not a joke at all.
