Protected: The Green Season | Episode 02: Little Farmers
Little Farmers is the day the whole season points toward: the fences go up against the foxes, the crates come down the levee like a parade, and Rosa calls the moment the way her father called it. Four hundred ducks hit flooded ground and ten thousand years of employment wakes up in every one of them, no orders, no wage, nothing upstream of it that can fail. Wren, the runaway who came up on the trade trucks, watches the settlement's whole engine run and starts pricing what it means that nothing here can be repossessed. Then, at the feast, the oldest joke in the valley gets performed the way it has been performed for three generations, and one question from an outsider reveals that nobody alive can say where it came from. By the end of the night an iron key has changed hands, and a room that was never locked is waiting to be believed.
