Protected: The Green Season | Episode 01: Seedbed
Seedbed opens in spring, in a farming settlement the city a hundred miles south insists is a fairy tale. Kit Lopes is nineteen, good at the work and restless inside it, seeding the year's rice by hand with his best friend Danny Turing the way their great-grandfathers did when the old world was busy dying of convenience. Then the trade trucks come up the river road carrying salt, iodine, mail, and one extra passenger who worked her passage: a city girl who gives the name Wren and gives nothing else. She can stay the season if she works. She cannot farm. She can learn. Told from years later by a narrator who already knows how the season ends, the episode moves through trade day, four hundred ducklings waiting for their employment, and a dusk on the levee where a girl who fled the city teaches a boy who has never seen it what the dark is actually for. Nineteen days until the ducks go in.
