The Cisco: The Dead Downtown Where the Fringe Keeps Working

The Cisco is the dead old downtown of the flats, a skyline that stopped mid-sentence. Half the towers stand dark, the single-room hotels are always full, and the oldest working blocks in Danger City keep working because nobody ever offered them anything else. Fifty years of use wore the district's grand old name down to one syllable, and the syllable stayed.

What the Cisco Is

The Cisco is what happens to a downtown when the money moves uphill and the people cannot follow. Before the Collapse this was somebody’s proud city center. Now the towers stand half-dark, the upper floors sealed or squatted, the street levels still trading because the street always finds a way. It holds the oldest working blocks in Danger City, blocks that have been doing roughly the same business under three different flags, and it holds the single-room hotels, which are always full, because a city that keeps people poor keeps them in small rooms.

The Name

The pillar rule of the flats applies here at its purest. The rich districts got rebranded; the working districts kept their old names, worn down by fifty years of use. The Cisco is a grand old name sanded down to one syllable by the mouths of people too busy to say all of it. Nobody alive says the long version. The short one is on the signs now, which is the closest thing to a democracy the naming of this city ever had.

The Texture of It

On the Cisco’s edge sits a motel whose sign has read VA ANCY for as long as anyone can remember, the C long dead, and that sign is the district’s honest flag. Inside, the hallways are the color of old bruises and the carpet remembers every heel that ever crossed it. These are working floors. The Cisco is where the trade goes when it cannot afford the Bottoms’ density or the Vale’s daylight, and the district asks no questions because the district stopped expecting answers around the time the towers went dark.

Why It Matters

The Cisco is the Fringe’s memory. Every other district in the flats is surviving the present. The Cisco is also carrying the past, a whole downtown’s worth of it, standing dark above the street trade like a reminder of what the city was willing to abandon once and could abandon again. People work beneath that reminder every day. Most have stopped looking up.

That is the Cisco. A downtown the city walked away from and the Fringe moved into, keeping the lights on where it can and the doors open where it must, under a name worn smooth as a step.
