The Bottoms: The Beating Heart of Danger City’s Fringe

The Bottoms is the heart of the Fringe, and the heart of nearly every story Danger City tells about itself. Rail yards, street markets, noodle shops with hotel floors above them, and the densest corners in the city, all of it running on a grid that drops twice a week. The flats were too poor to rebrand, and that plainness is the point: the Bottoms is called what it is.

The densest, plainest, most alive ground in the flats, and the district where most of the story happens.

What the Bottoms Is

The Bottoms is the heart of the Fringe, the low dense center of the working flats. Rail yards on one side, cheap rent everywhere, street markets, tech repair stalls, noodle shops with hotel suites four floors up, and corners packed closer than anywhere else in Danger City. When the reconstruction sold naming rights to the districts it cared about, nobody bid on the flats, so the flats kept the name the flats had always used for themselves. The Bottoms is called what it is. In a city built on flattering names, that plainness is almost a kind of honesty.

The Texture of It

The Bottoms at five in the evening is the city pretending to wake up before its real work begins. Vendors stacking crates. Shutters going up in the gray mornings, the rail yard groaning awake. The drones fly low here, the soft red eye of a Watchdog unit sweeping an awning, and the people below look up at them the way people look up at weather, as a thing that happens to them and not because of them. Everyone in the Bottoms is working, has just finished working, or is on the way to work, and a great deal of that work is the kind the Core pretends not to know about while pricing it precisely.

The Black Wire

In the middle of it all stands the Black Wire, the bar that functions as the district’s true civic center. Neutral ground, kept neutral by the man who pours in it. Dolls end their nights there. News arrives there first. In a district with no official institutions worth the name, a bar with a working light and a bartender who remembers everything is the closest thing the Bottoms has to a courthouse, a chapel, and a records office at once.

Why It Matters

Most of the story lives here. The Bottoms is where the work happens, where the money changes hands, where the missing go missing from. It is the district that proves the Fringe’s whole character: dirtier and louder and crueler than the Core, and, against everything the city does to it, kinder too.

That is the Bottoms. The city above it got a new name and a lit skyline. The Bottoms got the rail yards, the rent, and each other, and on most nights it would not trade.
